I think what you’re getting at is that using “female” as a noun is sketchy – it sounds like how you’d refer to an animal. But I’ve never seen anyone (else) object to its use as an adjective. What’s the thinking there?

Dehumanizing: That female has exceptional mammaries. ❌
Respectful: That woman has amazing breasts. ✅
Nothing wrong with: Mexico has a female president.

I think a lot of people got confused with female/woman and just blanket decided it was all offensive. You’ll see it all over social media when someone uses female as an adjective. I think it’s when the descriptor isn’t actually necessary that they get bent out of shape. Like if you were to say the female sportscaster got LeBron’s stats for the game incorrect, someone might be like “hmmm, that seems suspect”. But if you were like Pat the first female sportscaster on SportsnetworkXYZ, most people wouldn’t have a problem with it, but the people that have a problem with any usage of female would.

Yes, people referring to women as females the way you describe is something that misogynists do. But I’m more referring to how and use of female gets erroneously labeled as misogynistic because some people don’t understand that the word isn’t the problem, it’s how the word is used. I’ve often seen people say “you wouldn’t say male” in situations where people would in fact say male if they were describing a guy..
