Not to sound like I'm making excuses for vertical videos, but it works pretty well when watched on an Ipad.
Sure, but you can also easily rotate a mobile device to view in landscape. Not so easy with a desktop monitor or TV and then there is still wasted real-estate either side of the central image. Plus the resolution is reduced when the long edge of the source is squashed into the short edge during conversion.
